Can your business help change the poetry industry?

The Poetry Edit is a weekly newsletter promoting proper recompense for poets, and it is looking for collaborators!

As things currently stand:

  • Aside from book sales there are very few revenue streams for poets
  • Instances where poets are paid for single pieces of work are limited to winning poetry competitions and an extremely small number of paying literary journals.
  • Poets are largely resigned to giving out their work for free.

The Poetry Edit aims to challenge the status quo by:

 1) paying all poets featured in the newsletter

and

2) actively creating income opportunities for poets

Since the newsletter launched 3 weeks ago, the response has been huge, with over 1500 views in the last 3 days alone*.

There are several easy ways for your business to get involved, and they don't all have to cost ££:

Are you in the publishing industry? Would a poet be excited to get their work in front of you? You could be a guest judge of the newsletter for a week, helping to select one or two featured poets and offering your thoughts and critique -----------OR----------- Can you offer services or products instead of payment? Perhaps you run a pub or hotel and are looking for a poem for your website? You could offer payment in the form of a free meal or a night’s stay.

Sponsor a newsletter: This is essentially a newsletter takeover by your business, where you would choose the theme of the poems to be submitted, help to select one or two poems to feature in the newsletter, and decide how much featured poets would be paid for their poems. ----------------------------------------------------- Commission a poem: Do you need a poetry mural for your shop or a range of quirky poems for your napkins? Perhaps you need an arresting poem for your website or an attention-grabbing poem for your social media? Commissioning a poem offers a unique piece of work that leaves a lasting impression, and is made all the more exciting by supporting emerging talent. -------------------------------------------------------- Book a poetry workshop: These are a great alternative option for corporate bonding sessions – they help to promote creativity, build communication and cultivate connection.

Could you offer a poetry residency? The City Bridge Foundation recently broke the poetry corner of the internet with its poet-in-residence search, offering a generously paid role to immortalise in verse some of London’s most famous Thames crossings (see the link below for more information on what this looks like). Could your business celebrate some of its values or milestones through a series of poems? Residencies can last as long or as little as you need, and media, content and events can be built around them as necessary.

Why collaborate with The Poetry Edit specifically?

All those who submit poetry to The Poetry Edit are paid subscribers, meaning you will be reaching out to committed and engaged artists (who, judging by previous submissions, operate to a very high standard).   I can help you draft commission descriptions or poetry workshop briefs, and help you to create a shortlist of candidates.  Think of me as your poet recruiter, but one that doesn’t cost you anything!

This is a unique opportunity to connect with a neglected audience in a totally new way and support an industry that has been ignored financially for far, far, far too long!
